Plugging in: The Benefits of Using an Oil Pan Heater

vehicle with block heater plugged in

In many parts of Canada, plugging in your vehicle at night is just a part of the end-of-day routine in the winter.

Winter can be hard on your vehicle, an oil pan heater keeps your engine warm to protect several parts and components, and to make it easier for your vehicle to start.

 How Does it work?

When the engine is shut down the lube oil on/in the internal components drains down into the oil pan. Starting the vehicle in the cold, the oil in the pan imposes a heavy workload on the engine before the operating temperature is reached. This demand stresses each of the components and accelerates the internal wear.

Repeating this practice regularly may shorten the useable life of the engine.

Installing an oil pan heater on the outside of the oil pan, delivers hot oil at the oil pickup tube and produces near instant oil pressure to all of the internal components. Keeping that lube oil hot during shut down periods reduces the load at start up and helps to extend the useful life of the engine.

Before installing an oil pan heater, please check if your vehicle is equipped with and engine block heater.
