E(Electric)-License Plate for Germany

The e-licence plate is a special licence plate for vehicles with electric motors. These licence plates have been available in Germany since 2015 - however, it is a voluntary addition and is not obligatory for the vehicle owner, as it is not part of the actual individual licence plate. In the official documents, the number plate is noted without the "E" suffix. Nevertheless, it can make sense to have the "E" additionally stamped on the plate, as it offers some advantages.

The advantages of e-licence plates are not uniformly regulated. Instead, each city or municipality decides for itself which of the benefits it will grant to owners of electric vehicles, for example:

If a community has approved bus lanes for electric cars to drive on. In Hamburg and Stuttgart, owners of electric cars and an E license plate have been able to enjoy free parking.
